PayRange: job pay data for sale
Collect the pay ranges in public job ads every day and sell the tidy data to job sites and HR teams.
01The idea
What you'd build
Each day, read public job ads from the official job-board feeds companies publish. Pull out the pay ranges, tidy them, and sell access ($49–499 a month; estimate). Free pages like "Company X pay ranges" bring in visitors.
Why now: About half of US job ads on Indeed now show pay (July 2026), so there is a lot of public pay data to collect.
02Demand
Is anyone asking for this?
An idea is only worth your time if real people want it. Here's what we found.
- About half of US job ads on Indeed showed pay in July 2026; Canada 57%, UK 59.6%.
- TheirStack sells job-ad data from $49 a month, so buyers pay for this kind of data.
- We tested one public feed: 232 GitLab jobs, 108 with a dollar figure.
03The gap
Why isn't this solved already?
Levels.fyi's data feed costs $4,000 a month and leans to tech jobs. Cheap, non-tech, multi-country pay data is hard to find.
04The pain point
What hurts, and when
Small job sites and HR consultants need up-to-date pay data but can't pay big-company prices.
😣 When it hurts: When they need current pay ranges for non-tech jobs or other countries, and the big feeds cost too much.
05Who needs this
The person you'd build for
- 👤Who they are
- Job-board startups, HR consultants, small pay teams and researchers.
- 🧰What they use today
- Big pay-data feeds like Levels.fyi ($800–4,000 a month, mostly tech jobs), job-ad data from TheirStack (from $49 a month), or searching by hand.
- 📍Where to find them
- Google searches like "Company X pay ranges", data marketplaces where developers look for data, and job-site founders by email (you approve and send).
- 💳Why they'd pay
- Buyers already pay for this kind of data (TheirStack from $49 a month). $49–499 a month (estimate) is far below the big feeds.
06AI score
How much AI can do
🤖 AI does
- Builds the tool, the pages and the listing
- Runs checks and fixes problems
- Writes posts, emails and replies for you to check
- Turns your numbers into a weekly note
🙋 You do
- Make the accounts and pass ID checks
- Approve what AI makes
- Post, send and talk to buyers
- Handle the money, tax and decisions
AI can also prepare the selling and marketing work: posts, emails and replies. But a person has to do it: post, send and talk to buyers.
How hard is it? Hard.
07Your AI
What to have your AI do
Use any AI assistant you like. One paid plan (~$20 a month) is usually enough. Here's what to have it do:
Search the web for people asking for this, and list who already sells it and their weak spots.
Write the tool step by step, test it, and explain anything you need to do by hand.
Write your website, store listing and help pages in plain words, with no income claims.
Draft posts, emails and replies. You edit them, then post and send them yourself.
Keep your FAQ and refund rules in one saved chat or project, so every reply follows them.
Re-run the tests, check for changes, and turn your weekly numbers into a short note.
